Philosophical Musings on Orange is the New Black

Like the average female college student that I am, I gulped down the entire first season of Orange is the New Black on Netflix in the span of about three days while lounging in my bed at home over the summer. I loved it. The drama! The intrigue! The crazy incarcerated lesbians! Cute prison guards! Taylor Schilling being a badass! Donna from That 70s Show officially destroying my childhood! WHEN DOES SEASON 2 COME OUT?!

Lots of excitement.

Anyway, I recently read the book and was completely floored by the differences between Piper Kerman's real life experience with incarceration, and the Netflix original series. While the show is entertaining, intriguing, and pretty great, the book is something else entirely.

Piper Kerman focuses on things like, "We have a racially based justice system that overpunishes, fails to rehabilitate, and doesn't make us safer."

Wait. Pipes. I thought prison was kinda glamorous, right? And dramatic? And entertaining?

The fact of the matter is this: Orange is the New Black is actually pretty deep.

Kerman's views on life in the prison system actually reflect a deeper truth about handling difficult situations with grace. Her experiences with her fellow inmates reveal exactly how little we think about who we deem "dangerous" or "punishable". Kerman isn't trying to claim that every woman in the Danbury Correctional Facility, including herself, is blameless or innocent, but she makes a fair point: we waste time, resources, and a whole lot of money trying to "reform" through punishment.“In the federal system alone there were 90,000 prisoners locked up for drug offenses, compared with about 40,000 for violent crimes. A federal prisoner costs at least $30,000 a year to incarcerate, and females actually cost more.”

Frequently, Kerman points out that most of the women incarcerated in the facility are there because of drug related crimes. Usually not because they are addicts, but simply because they didn't know how to get a job in society. They were not educated. They were not given opportunities. They did not have access to learning a trade or obtaining a skill set. "Prison is quite literally a ghetto in the most classic sense of the word, a place where the U.S. government now puts not only the dangerous but also the inconvenient—people who are mentally ill, people who are addicts, people who are poor and uneducated and unskilled.”

The education system in prison, as detailed by Kerman, is severely lacking. One example is the re-entry education which is meant to prepare women to re-enter society and get a job. “Nothing about the daily workings of the prison system focuses its inhabitants’ attention on what life back on the outside, as a free citizen, will be like. The life of the institution dominates everything. This is one of the awful truths of incarceration, the fact that the horror and the struggle and the interest of your immediate life behind prison walls drives the “real world” out of your head. That makes returning to the outside difficult for many prisoners.”

What usually occurs after being released from prison, is that women end up in homeless shelters, jobless, and hardened. The set of circumstances that landed them in jail still exist: they still do not have access to housing or a steady job. In fact, they are even more hindered in their search for work because of their label: "convict".

The following quote from Ms. Kerman sums it all up: “Our current criminal justice system has no provision for restorative justice, in which an offender confronts the damage they have done and tries to make it right for the people they have harmed. Instead, our system of "corrections" is about arm's-length revenge and retribution, all day and all night.”

Not all of Piper Kerman's book is gloom and doom about the system, though. She details some of the incredible women she met, how was able to find inner peace and tranquility through yoga (woohoo!) and exercise, the love and support that she experienced from her family, and the insight that she gained into the lives of women she never would've met.

Overall, both the Netflix series and the book, Orange is the New Black, provide a view into a world that I never would've seen, an opportunity to understand how the poor and disadvantaged are treated, and the reassurance that it is possible to be Glam Zen, even in an orange jumpsuit.

Trader Joe's Blueberry Mango Smoothie! (Coconut Water, Greek Yogurt, and Chia Seeds OH MY!)

Reasons to be happy today: I slept in until 10:30, I just shaved my legs and they feel like BUTTAH, I'm wearing a romper (romp and roll!) and I have an awesome smoothie!

"Smoothie?!", you ask?

Yes.

Not just any smoothie, either. A blueberry mango greek yogurt smoothie that costs about $2 to make! So put THAT in your $6 Jamba Juice and suck it!

Okay, enough smoothie gloating. I know you're all incredibly jealous, so I'll include some photos to increase the smoothie envy.

Okay. So I started off with the basics: frozen blueberries, frozen mangos, vanilla greek yogurt, Zico coconut water, a packet of Emergen-C (because I'm a freak), and an adorable little smoothie blender by Oster!

The way that you put the ingredients in the blender is actually a BIGGIE for smoothie perfection. Since I have a tiny blender, I want to make sure that the blades are directly trying to pulverize frozen fruit, so we start with the greek yogurt. Put a couple spoonfuls in there, but not the entire amount that you actually want in your smoothie (you'll want to sandwich the frozen fruit between layers of greek yogurt and coconut water. I call this idea smoothie engineering. Get into it.)

This is a totally optional step, but I HATE BEING SICK. I also HATE THE TASTE OF EMERGEN-C. Solution? Throw it in a delicious smoothie and pretend like its not even happening. No sickness, no awkward raspberry chalk taste! Yay!

Coconut water. COME TO MAMA. This stuff is incredible. I don't really enjoy the taste of it on its own, but I really can't argue with the health benefits and hydration it provides, so I put it in a smoothie. Basically, anything you don't like but know you need to eat can be put in a smoothie. That's my philosophy on life. I put about a half cup of this stuff in a smoothie, but you can absolutely do more or less depending on how you're feeling today!

FRUIT. I love fruit. It's awesome. It's like nature's candy. Plop some blueberries and mangos or whatever fruit you're fancying on top of the greek yogurt/coconut water gloop. It looks gross. It's gonna be awesome. Trust me.

Top it off with some more greek yogurt (just a spoonful will do it), and a splash of coconut water, and blend that ish!

I love blending. I'm weird. Sorry.

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP.
You MUST pour the smoothie into a fun glass. Like this tiki glass. It ups the happiness factor by like 200000%. Guaranteed. Do it.

Now sip it and be happy!
PS, $2.09 per smoothie when you buy all these ingredients at Trader Joe's like I did. Wooohoo!

I like to pair this smoothie with something else since I'm a hungry girl.

Enter the flax and chia seed triple berry multigrain cereal!

Hello, gorgeous.

YUM.

Anyway, enough about my breakfast.

Have a glamorous, zen, happy, joyful day that's as stupendous as you are!

Girl. Relax. You're Fabulous. (Guided Meditation Apps and Affirmations)

So, I want to talk about something very near and dear to my heart: my iPhone.

JUST KIDDING.

Yes, the iPhone is possibly the best idea ever for me since I'm helpless with directions and probably wouldn't make it out my front door let alone into the city without my trusty map app.

But more importantly, the iPhone has given me access to some of the best resources for relaxation techniques, free guided meditations, and daily affirmations. The photo above is a screen shot of some of my fave apps for living the Glam Zen life.

Headspace

Oh, buddy. This app is the best. Created by Andy Puddicombe (kick-ass last name if you ask me), a Clinical Meditation Consultant, former Buddhist monk, and incredible TED talk giver , this app teaches you the basics of meditation. With the complimentary TAKE10 program, you have access to ten of Andy's 10 minute guided meditations.

With a focus on body and mind awareness, Andy's meditations teach you to slow down and appreciate the world around you. Each meditation will start by prompting you to take some deep breaths, continue with some guidance on comfortable meditating posture, and then flow into a relaxing meditation that generally leaves me slightly drool-y, but 100% refreshed, revived, and joyous about this beautiful world we live in.

BONUS: after you complete TAKE10, you'll get an email offering a special deal on a subscription to further meditations (not necessary to continue using the app, but nifty anyways!).

Spirit Junkie

Okay, okay, okay, okay. Things you need to know about me: I want a corgi, I love show tunes, and Gabrielle Bernstein has got it going on. This girl is the definition of Glam Zen. After reading her book, Spirit Junkie, I decided to make some major life changes for the better. Her inspiration and miracle working know-how is distilled into this handy little app! I love the daily affirmations it doles out each day and that gorgeous drawing of her meditating reminds me of how much inner beauty we all have and what we can achieve by connecting to that gorgeous soul.

Sleep Stream

I am a world class insomniac, and until I started taking melatonin and meditating, this app was one of my favorite ways to calm down and get ready for sleeping. This app uses binaural beats to stimulate the mind in different patterns which can result in relaxation, meditation, focus, or energy. Basically, you choose a bin beat program, plug in your headphones, and relax while this slightly creepy sound plays softly in your ears and you're slowly lulled to sleep (or energized or focused or whatever you choose!). Now, of course this isn't magic, but for me it works extremely well and I highly recommend it.
In addition to those hip binaural beats, SleepStream also has a great selection of ambient sounds such as  6 kinds of rainfall noises, 8 types of waves, 6 types of white noise, fireplace sounds, and a bunch of other assorted noises (like submarine… uh. Trying that one ASAP!)

Happify

And now, one of my absolute faves! Happify is a website created by specialists in psychology who have put together different "tracks" filled with activities (quizzes, little meditations, challenges, games) that boost your happiness level! Its like a little bit of sunshine in your pocket.

That's all for today! Let me know if you enjoyed this post and what else you'd like me to blog about in the comments!

Love and light,
